Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas -- Tex Ritter

Tex Ritter (1905-1974) was an American country music singer and B-Western cowboy actor from the mid-1930s to the 1960s.  Ritter was a pioneer in country music who performed on radio shows in the late 1920s and early 1930s.  He began recording for American Record Company (Columbia Records) in 1933.

In 1936 he moved to Los Angeles and broke into movies starring in twelve B-Westerns for Grand National Pictures.  Later he moved to Universal Pictures and teamed with Johnny Mack Brown.  After Universal developed financial difficulties he moved to Producers Releasing Corporation as "Texas Ranger Tex Haines" for eight features between 1944 and 1945. Ritter did not return to acting until 1950, playing mostly supporting roles or himself.

At the first televised Academy Awards ceremony in 1953, he sang "High Noon", which received an Oscar for Best Song in High Noon (1952).  Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he performed on various radio and television shows as well as touring.  For his contribution to the recording industry, Ritter has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
